Holmes Herbert

Holmes Edward Herbert, actually Edward Horace Jenner, ( born July 30, 1882 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England; † December 26, 1956 in Hollywood, California ) was a British actor.

Life

Holmes Herbert was born as Edward Jenner in England Horace, his Psyeudonym " Holmes" was inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle's master detective Sherlock Holmes. In fact, Herbert should occur towards the end of his career in the 1940s in six of the Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone. At an early age Herbert appeared in the so-called minstrel shows or circus. Eventually he went to the USA. He first appeared there on Broadway, but then took place in the 1910s the way to Hollywood, where he was able to establish quickly. Like, for example, Roland Young, and Reginald Denny, he played mostly British gentleman, but which are left at the end of the lead actress. The change in the silent film he initially managed well. Some of his most famous roles played Herbert in the early sound era, eg as Dr. Lanyon in the horror film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ( 1931).

Holmes embodied with its well-kept, something aristrokratischen appearance usually distinguished authority figures. During his career he played, among other politicians, generals, lawyers or doctors. Mid -1930s, was Herbert's success significantly. More and more of his roles in major films were not mentioned in the credits. On the side of Errol Flynn Herbert entered the movies on Captain Blood, The Treason of Surat Khan, a favorite of the Queen, and Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds. In 1952 he retired from the film business. Holmes Herbert was married three times, including to actress Beryl Mercer, with whom he had his only child. He was 74 years old.
