Horace Vernet

Horace Vernet Emile Jean (* June 30, 1789 in Paris, † January 17, 1863 ) was a French historical and military painter and lithographer.

Life

Vernet learned his artistic training from his father, Antoine Charles Horace Vernet and his grandfather Jean -Michel Moreau. A sort of internship with the painter François -André Vincent was not very productive for him ( his own words ).

At 22, married Louise Vernet 1811 Jeanne Pujol. With her he had a daughter; the future wife of the painter Paul Delaroche.

1814 Vernet commanded by marshal Bon Adrien Jeannot de - Moncey with in defending the barrier of Clichy. With the image Defense de la barrière Clichy he immortalized in 1820 this is happening on screen. In the same year Vernet broke up together with his father for a study tour of Italy.

1826 convened the Académie des Beaux -Arts in Paris Vernet successor to Jean Jacques Le Barbier. 1829 became Vernet Director of the Académie de France in Rome. He held until 1835 and then entered it over at Jean -Auguste -Dominique Ingres, this office. Between 1839 and 1840, traveled Vernet together with Frédéric Goupil - sinem students Fresquet the Orient.

Vernet returned to Paris and won King Louis Philippe as a patron. Thus, and by his enormous work that he hosted all the taste of the audience, he reached a sensational breakthrough. From a riding accident, Vernet could never recover and spent his last years largely unproductive. At the age of 73 years, Emile Jean Horace Vernet died on January 17, 1863 in Paris.

Trivia

In the Sherlock Holmes story The Greek Interpreter is said Horace Vernet was a great-uncle of Sherlock Holmes.
