Architecture

The House of Finance is a new building on the University's Campus Westend Frankfurt. The building was designed by the architects Kleihues Kleihues ( in succession of the late Josef Paul Kleihues ). The Campus Westend is dominated by the IG Farben building by architect Hans Poelzig whose external appearance is characterized by a hole in the facade of the New Objectivity and the extensive use of travertine and is therefore also stylistically moved to the vicinity of neoclassicism. Appropriately, also pursues the House of Finance as the other new buildings on campus neoclassical style principles. The front and side facades are heavily screened and applied strictly axisymmetric, they are each divided into three parts with the corners of buildings, accented by narrow windows cut, and center panels that open with larger windows to the outside. The window openings themselves are accentuated by profiled jambs. Window and wall surfaces are coordinated so that a continuous joint pattern of natural stone cladding is achieved.

Inside the building in the upper stories is characterized by individual offices and combined zones for researchers and students in which both a single, as well as a community use is possible. How could a high compression of land is reached. On the side of the head are seminar rooms on the upper floors. On the ground floor opens after entering the building a spacious, naturally illuminated foyer, to the lecture halls and seminar rooms, as well as the information center - a reference library - Connect. Floor, walls and ceiling of the foyer access the design grid of the entire building, which is inspired by Raphael's fresco The School of Athens, which is particularly visible in the floor design. The building houses the ground floor computer rooms and one after the sponsor named as Börsenzeitung bistro Public Cafe of the Student Frankfurt am Main.

Criticism

The emergence of the House of Finance as part of the Goethe University is especially for left-wing student groups met with criticism. In the center of criticism is the involvement of the financial sector, which is seen as influencing the orientation of research and teaching. The strikingly -present in the House of Finance sponsorship announcements are perceived as inappropriate and provocative; some rooms are named after sponsors. Furthermore, it is criticized that the presence of the House of Finance on the university campus is incompatible with the principles of open for students and citizens educational and research institution. Thus, areas of the building are accessible only with smart card at the emergency exits and lockers cameras are installed. However, other areas of the University are not public and limited access by means of the so-called Goethe Card. Also in other buildings of the university and the emergency exits provided with access library book security systems are backed by camera.
