Hron

The Hron at Kamenica nad Hronom, shortly before it flows into the Danube

The Hron ( German Gran, Hungarian Garam ) is a 298 km long left tributary of the Danube. It lies entirely on the territory of Slovakia.

The Hron rises in the Low Tatras on the mountain Kráľova hoľa. He runs first westward, where it separates the Low Tatras from the Slovak Ore Mountains. In Banská Bystrica, the course then changes abruptly to the south, near Zvolen west again. From Žiar nad Hronom the river then directed to the southwest. With a moderate run it then flows through the counter Located in the southwest of Slovakia lowlands of the Danube, in which he shortly before the state border, in the Slovak town of Štúrovo and against the Hungarian city of Esztergom, opens.

Until the 1930s, wood was floated on the river.
