Hubert Berchtold

Hubert Berchtold ( born July 28, 1950 in Alberschwende ) is a former Austrian alpine skier. The giant slalom and slalom specialist won a race in the World Cup and four in the European Cup competitions.

Career

In the 1960s, Berchtold get first success at junior level. His young career was interrupted by several injuries and 1968, he failed because of a broken foot all season. At the beginning of the 1970s he achieved good results in the Austrian championships: 1970, he became vice champion in slalom in 1971 he finished third in the downhill.

In the European Cup Berchtold had 1971/72 success in the season. With two giant slalom victories in Tarvisio, Saalfelden and three other podium finishes, he won the giant slalom standings, was third in the slalom standings and in the standings, only the Italians Ilario Pegorari reached more points. After this success, the Vorarlberg started from next season in the World Cup.

His first and only in the winter 1972/73 result in the points, so in the top ten, was the sixth place in the giant slalom in Megève on January 19, 1973. Quite surprisingly won Berchtold on December 16, 1973 in front of his compatriots Thomas Hauser and Hansi hinterseer the giant slalom in Saalbach -Hinterglemm. Another time he did not come in the 1973/74 season but in the top ten. However, he finished with his victory the seventh place in the giant slalom World Cup. In the European Cup he played in this winter only a few races, but he won the giant slalom in the house.

In the World Cup season 1974/75 Berchtold went three times to tenth place and once in eighth place. In the European Cup twice, however, he came to the podium. Due to an injury he could only belatedly to race in the winter 1975/76. In the European Cup Vorarlberg succeeded in the giant slalom in Bizau another victory in the World Cup, it remained without points. The following summer, Berchtold announced his resignation.
