Hubert Janitschek

Hubert Janitschek ( born October 30, 1846 in Opava, † June 21, 1893 in Leipzig) was an Austrian art historian. He was a professor at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Leipzig. He dealt with Leon Battista Alberti and the Renaissance and Pre-Romanesque.

1868 to 1873 he studied at the University of Graz. During this time he was also a critic and became friends with Peter Roseggerhaus. From 1877 he was in Italy and then curator of the Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna. He habilitated in 1878 at the University of Vienna in art history and in 1879 associate professor in Prague. In 1881 he became a full professor at the University of Strasbourg, where he was also curator of the Art Gallery of Wilhelm von Bode. In 1891 he became a professor at the University of Leipzig.

In 1890 he introduced the concept Ottonian art that was tangible in addition to the architecture in the book Painting (after preparatory work by Johann Dominik Fiorillo, Franz Kugler, Gustav scales). He left open the question whether the period of Ottonian art ended at the beginning or end of the 11th century, his Strasbourg colleague Anton Springer spoke in favor of mid-11th century.

His students included Georg Dehio, Aby Warburg, Paul Clemen, Wilhelm Vöge.

He was married to the writer Maria Janitschek since 1882.
