Hugh, Count of Brienne

Hugh of Brienne (c. 1240; † August 8, 1296 ) was a Count of Brienne and Lecce. He was the second surviving son of Count Walter IV of Brienne and Mary of Lusignan Cyprus out of the house.

His father died between the years 1244 and 1247, after his older brother John I succeeded in the county of Brienne in France. When Johann 1260/61, also died Hugo inherited the county as well as the claims of the family in southern Italy, including the Principality of Taranto and the County of Lecce, which had been confiscated in 1205.

He claimed beyond 1264 as the son of the eldest daughter of Alice of Jerusalem and Hugh I of Cyprus as regent in the kingdom of Jerusalem for the minor and absent Conradin of Hohenstaufen ( and thus indirectly recognition as a successor ), but was in favor of the Haute Cour his cousin Hugh of Antioch passed over, and then retired from politics largely in Outremer back. As another cousin, King Hugh II of Cyprus, 1267 died, he was put on hold again against the regent of Antioch Hugo, of the throne of Cyprus as Hugo III. ascended ( and 1268 followed as Hugo I. in Jerusalem).

Hugo decided now to try his luck in Europe. He entered the service of Charles of Anjou and helped this from 1266 in the conquest of the Kingdom of Sicily. He struggled in 1268 with the Battle of Tagliacozzo against Conradin. In the next few years he was appointed by Charles of Anjou to the Captain-General of Brindisi, Otranto and Apulia, and the Lord of Conversano. He was a staunch supporter of the Angevin cause in Italy, which has been rewarded him in 1269 with the return of the County of Lecce.

After the outbreak of the Sicilian Vespers in 1282 Hugo took part in the fight against Aragon. In the naval battle in the Bay of Naples on June 5, 1284, he was just as Prince Charles of Salerno captured. For his release in 1289 he joined his rights to the Cypriot throne of King Alfonso III. of Aragón from. Hugo was finally made in 1296 at the Battle of Gagliano in the fight against Roger of Lauria.
