Conversano

Conversano is an ancient city in the Italian region of Puglia, whose province of Bari, 30 km south-east of Bari, 7 km from the Adriatic Sea and about 219 meters above sea level. There live 25,860 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) on an area of 126 km ².

History

Conversano was a major county whose counts were related with the Norman rulers in the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kingdom of England in the Middle Ages. Among the counts are:

  • Robert Basse Ville, Robert de Basse Ville de Normandy de Loretel Count of Conversano, married Judith of Sicily, daughter of Count Roger I (Haute Ville)

Attractions

  • The main attraction is the medieval castle from the time when the Normans and subsequently the Staufer ruled the Kingdom of Sicily.
  • The Romanesque Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Conversano - Monopoli.
  • The Baroque church of SS Cosma e Damiano
  • The Monastery of San Benedetto
  • The Marchione Castle and the ruins of Castiglione

The handball team of Conversano was in season 2002/ 03 2003/ 04 2005/ 06 2009/10 Italian masters.
