Casamassima

Cassamassima is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 19,471 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Bari, in Puglia. The village is located about 18 kilometers south of Bari on the eastern edge of the Murgia.

History

The origin of the settlement can not be detected. Presumably, the foundation is in the early Middle Ages, between the 8th and 10th centuries. Only 962 is mentioned in a document of the place. Under Frederick II, the settlement of his kingdom. A little later ( 1195) it is given the Massimi family fief. This also explains the name of the place. 1348 will be the place part of the reign of Taranto.

Traffic

Located just west of the village runs the Autostrada A14, the place is, however, connected only to the Strada Statale 100 from Bari to Taranto. Casamassima has a station on the route from Bari to Putignano.
