Giovinazzo

Giovinazzo is an Italian commune in the province of Bari with 20,392 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). The place is situated on the Adriatic coast 19 km from Bari.

Giovinazzo was a small, fortified center in Roman times. Later commercial center developed, the connections to Venice entertained. Today, the site has next to trade and industry is an important fishing port.

Attractions

  • The cathedral " Santa Maria Assunta " was built in the 12th and 13th centuries in Apulian - Romanesque style with Norman and oriental elements. Giovinazzo was a bishopric until it came up in 1836 in the diocese of Molfetta - Ruvo - Giovinazzo - Terlizzi. The Arco Traiano uses four Roman columns, remember their inscriptions to the Emperor Trajan. The arch of the gate probably dates from the 14th century.
  • The Palazzo Ducale dates from the 13th century.
