Hugh I of Cyprus

Hugh I (* 1195, † January 10, 1218 in Tripoli) was from 1205 to 1218 a king of Cyprus from the house of Lusignan.

Hugo was the only son of King Amalric I. / II. Cyprus - Jerusalem from his first marriage with Eschiva of Ibelin. After his father's death he followed to the throne of Cyprus, in Jerusalem entitled to inherit his stepsister Maria of Montferrat.

Since Hugo was only ten years old at the throne, his cousin Walter of Montbéliard, a French knight, the regency was transferred. Hugo married in 1208 in accordance with the agreement, which had made their fathers, his step- sister Alice. When Hugo took over the government itself in 1210, Walter of Montbeliard was forced to go into exile. He was accused, among other things, to have enriched themselves from the Royal Treasury.

Hugo I always had a tense relationship with the Church and Pope, Cyprus gave but a strong government.

In 1217 Hugo (fifth crusade ) decided his Cypriot knighthood in the crusade of Damietta to lead. In Acre, he found himself, however, with King John of Brienne in dispute, as the King of Jerusalem, claimed the command of the entire crusade army. During his knights moved on with King John to Damietta, Hugo decided instead to King Andrew II of Hungary to accompany a piece on his way home and took in Tripoli at the wedding of his half-sister Melisende Prince Bohemond IV of Antioch with some. There, he died suddenly on 10 January 1218.

Hugo left the throne of Cyprus his eight- month-old son Henry († 1254 ), the regency of Cyprus passed to his widow Alice. In addition to Henry, he had two daughters:
