Hugo Alcântara came to Europe in 2001, after he had previously been active in several Brazilian clubs. He joined Vitória Setúbal, which had just gained in the Portuguese Super Liga. After relegation in 2002, the club were relegated a year later. Alcântara had meanwhile won a regular place and remained loyal to the club in the House, where in 2004 the back in the Bundesliga. In the season 2004/ 05 he also managed to avoid relegation, but the same year he was able to celebrate after winning the Portuguese Football Cup his first title.

Then left Alcântara Setúbal and moved on to league rivals Académica de Coimbra. In 2006 it took the Polish giants Legia Warsaw, where he could not prevail, so that he returned in 2007 to Portugal and tied to Belenenses Lisbon.

In summer 2008, the reigning Romanian champions CFR Cluj Alcântara brought into the League 1 where he could until the second half of the 2008/09 season prevail and won with the club the Romanian football cup. The following season was the most successful of his career: In addition to the re- Cup triumph, he also won his first championship.

During the winter break of 2010/11 he left the club and joined Montedio Yamagata Japan. This he left three months later but again and moved back home to Atlético Paranaense in the Série A.

In July 2011, he was obliged by the Portuguese club União Leiria for a year.
