Ian Murdock

Ian Murdock (born 28 April 1973 in Konstanz) is an American computer scientist. In the Linux scene he made primarily by the creation of the Debian project a name.

Life

Ian Murdock, son of entomologists Larry L. Murdock, to 1975 at the University of Constance worked as a postdoc in 1968, graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette ( Indiana) and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor Degree in computer science. He founded on 16 August 1993 the Debian project ( the name consists of his name and his then-wife Debra together) and ran it until 1996. Between 1997 and 2000 he worked for the University of Arizona as a programmer and attended lectures on the computer science faculty. Together with John H. Hartman, he founded the company in 2000 Progeny Linux Systems. He was involved in various Linux projects and in the open- source movement. Since 2006, he was technical director of the Linux Foundation and directed the Linux Standard Base. He worked there, the LSB 3.1 and the roadmap for the next revision 4.0.

Since March 2007 he works for Sun Microsystems. There he is the Chief Operating Platforms Officer worry about the strategic direction of Sun's Solaris and Linux activities in the newly created position for him. In May 2007, the Project Indiana was started by Sun, whose goal is to make Solaris and Linux compatible with each other, and whose line Murdock took over.

Ian Murdock has three children with his ex-wife Debra and lives in Indianapolis, Indiana.
