Ibrahim Maalouf

Ibrahim Maalouf ( born December 5, 1980 in Beirut ) is a Franco- Lebanese musician ( trumpet and piano player), composer and arranger.

Biography

Ibrahim Maalouf comes from a family of academics and artists. He is the son of trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and pianist Nada Maalouf, nephew of the writer Amin Maalouf and grandson of Rushdi Maalouf, journalist, poet and musicologist. Ibrahim Maalouf plays on a quarter-tone trumpet, as before, his father Don Ellis and others. In July 2010 he was awarded the Prix Frank Ténot as " French rediscovery " (" Révélation ") of the year the Jazz Prize "Les Victoires du Jazz " in Juan -les-Pins.

Childhood and youth

Because of the Civil War, his family fled from Lebanon to France. Maalouf lived with his parents and his two years older sister Layla near Paris, where he attended school until the age of 17 years. He put his baccalaureate at the Lycée Geoffroy -Saint -Hilaire in Etampes ( in the Essonne ) from, with a focus on mathematics.

Maalouf has started very early to play piccolo trumpet. The age of nine he accompanied his father as a duo partner through Europe and the Middle East with a baroque repertoire by Vivaldi, Purcell, Albinoni, etc. Thus he discovered the audience and the audience discovered him. Artistic Career

After passing the entrance examination at the Paris Regional Conservatory ( Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris ), he went through a two year training as a student of Gérard Boulanger. He then continued his studies at the Paris Conservatoire renonmmierten CNSM in the class of Antoine Curé. During his five years of study, he participated in numerous national and international trumpet competitions.

Between 1999 and 2003, Maalouf winners of 15 competitions around the world. Since 2006, he teaches the subject trumpet at the Conservatory of Aubervilliers -La Courneuve. Maalouf is regularly invited to give master classes and recitals in France or abroad, especially in the U.S. where he has entered into a long-term cooperation with Kansas State University. Several times Maalouf has already been appointed to represent France at the ITG (International Trumpet Guild ), the trumpet players from all over the world for concerts and master classes brings together every year.

Maalouf also composes classical works for various ensembles. He composed a work commissioned for the music festival " Printemps de Bourges ", which was performed there and in the Cathedral of Brussels.

Encounters and cooperation

Even if Maalouf at times presented intense competitions, he devoted himself especially to improvisation and composition, which are strongly influenced by Arabic music and jazz. During his studies at the Paris Conservatory ( CNSM ) Maalouf visited in addition to the lessons for classical trumpet always the jazz courses. His first self-educated in jazz is due to experience in big bands and in other groups. He often plays in Paris jazz clubs, where he often ensemble and composition changes on the search for his own sound.

2000 introduced him to the producer Marc- Antoine Moreau before the cellist Vincent Ségal. In the following time Ibrahim met many other musicians such as Amadou & Mariam, Matthieu Chedid, Lhasa de Sela, Angel Parra, Jeanne Cherhal, Arthur H, Marcel Khalife.

In 2007 and 2009 he accompanied the French singer Vincent Delerm on tour and played both piano, Wurlitzer piano, vibraphone, synthesizer, drums and trumpet. During this time he also completed his second album, released in 2009. In 2011 he participated in André Manoukians album Melanchology.

The musical work

1999 Maalouf presents for the first time his compositions to the public. His first group, " Farah " was a jazz - oriented and at the same time heavily inspired by oriental music. Cast of this group consisted of saxophone, ney, flute, piano, bass, guitar, Buzuq and oriental percussion.

2004 saw Maalouf with the electrical division in contact thanks to the encounter with Lhasa de Sela. Through his collaboration with pop and rock singers he discovered other musical styles as jazz, classical and Arabic music. 2006 Maalouf met Alejandra Norambuena Skira from the SACEM, the French Gema, who introduced him to the producer Jean -Louis Perrier.
