Inangahua Junction

Inangahua Junction is a small town in the Buller District of the West Coast region on the South Island of New Zealand. It lies at the mouth of Inangahua River in the Buller River, 34 kilometers north of Reefton and 46 kilometers southeast of Westport. Murchison is 52 km east. At the 2006 census the town had 159 residents, a decrease of nine residents since 2001.

The main industries are forestry, coal mining, farm economy and sawmills. The village has shops, a fire station and an earthquake museum. South of Inangahua place in private grounds of the year instead of the two-day music festival " PHAT ", which is attended by about 5,000 guests. A smaller one-day festival " PHAT MOON " will take place at Easter.

The name refers to the word inanga, in the language of Māori for edible young fish of some types of galaxies. Was formerly known as Christie Inangahua Junction Junction.

Earthquake

The place was taken on May 24, 1968 at 5:24 clock by an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 MW, which caused numerous landslides. The population was temporarily evacuated. Three people were killed and another three died in the crash of a helicopter during the evacuation.

Traffic

The village lies at the junction of State Highway 69 from State Highway 6

Inangahua Junction is located on the railway in the Stillwater - Westport Line. Here the connection this line should lie with the never-completed Nelson Section. 1914, the railway line from Cronadun was opened to Inangahua Junction, however, the further construction through the gorge Buller Gorge was slow. In July 1942, the first trains the entire distance between Stillwater and Westport began to drive on, the official opening took place on 5 December 1943. A passenger was set up then with " Vulcan " railcar RM class in Stillwater had to train connection which plied on the Midland Line between Greymouth and Christchurch. 1967, passenger services were discontinued, the route has since been used primarily for the transport of coal.

Education

The Inangahua Junction School is a co-educational primary school for grades 1 to 6 with 14 students and a decile rating of 6 in 2011. The school already existed in 1887.

The former Inangahua College joined in 2004 with the school in Reefton for " Reefton Area School " together. The College, formerly the Reefton District High School had 38 years there.
