Life and work

Inge Neufeld grew up in Berlin and studied sculpture at 1936-1937 Hermann Nonnenmacher (1892-1988) and was taken in 1937, at the Berlin Academy of Art. In 1938 she was expelled from the academy as a Jew. In 1939, she left Nazi Germany and emigrated to London, where she studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1940. Soon after, she continued her education at the Glasgow School of Art. Her first work was the bronze sculpture "Warsaw" (Warsaw ) in 1943 they processed their impressions of the Second World War. After the war, she worked in London. There, her work was shown in 1949 for the first time in an exhibition. During visits to Paris and New York, she came in 1950 with the abstract expressionism in contact. After returning to London, she married the Australian Graphic Grahame King, with whom she emigrated to Australia in 1951. Inge King has lived and worked since then in Warrandyte, a suburb of Melbourne.

The first experiences gathered Inge King in Australia, were daunting. The promoted by sculptors such as Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, and Constantin Brâncuşi renewal of sculpture had passed Australia. 1953 King founded in Melbourne with the Bildhaueren Julius Kane, Clifford load and Norma Redpath, the artist group Group of Four who stood up for modern, abstract sculpture, in industrial materials and geometric shapes. Inge King initially began working in wood and stone, but discovered 1959, the oxyacetylene for themselves.

1961 at a meeting organized by Julius Kane, the artist group Centre Five Group was founded. Members were the Group of Four and Vincas Jomantas, Tesutis Zikaras and Lenton Parr. At the meeting, a five-point plan has been established, which provided especially joint exhibitions. The fact that the artist formed a Secession and leaked from the Victorian Sculptors ' Society, led to a deep split among the sculptors of the state. The first group exhibitions were held in 1963, 1964 and 1965. Also in 1974 and 1984 works of art group at Centre -five exhibitions were shown.

From 1960 until the late 1980s created Inge King almost exclusively monumental sculptures made of stainless steel for public spaces. From 1989, she rediscovered the bronze and created smaller works like Joie de vivre (1989 ), Dancer (1990/ 1991) and Daedalus (1994).
