Institute for Advanced Study

The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS ) is a private research institute in Princeton, New Jersey. The IAS is not part of the university system, even if the spatial proximity to Princeton University leads to close informal connections and collaborations. It is particularly known as the last place of activity of Albert Einstein.

1930 enabled Louis Bamberger ( 1855-1944 ), a businessman and philanthropist from Newark (New Jersey), and his twin sister Caroline Bamberger Fuld with a donation of five million dollars founding of the Institute. This donation was initially intended for the creation of a training center for dentists, but a fellow educator, Abraham Flexner, persuaded her to send the money for basic research. Flexner was the founding officers and first director of the IAS from 1930 until 1939.

There are four departments, the School of Historical Studies, the School of Mathematics, the School of Natural Sciences and the School of Social Science. Laboratories or facilities for experiments, however, are not present. Currently, four schools are run by a total of 26 permanent members. The Institute awards each year nearly 200 grants to visiting scholars from around the world.
