International Standard Music Number

ISMN is the abbreviation for International Standard Music Number. The ISMN is based on the standard ISO 10957; it serves the global identification of music notations in printed or digital form. An ISMN does not identify the work itself, but its various manifestations ( eg, issues of different publishers, score, Study Edition, Piano, etc.).

Genesis

The standard has been designed in accordance with the International Standard Book Number (ISBN ). With the ISBN number Standard supplementary they sought to take account of the fact that the music market is structured differently than the book market and therefore can be operated only insufficiently with the ISBN.

The initiative to create a unique identifier for music came from the British section of the International Association of Music Librarians, Archives and Documentation Centres ( IAML ). The ISO standard was adopted in December 1993. Today in 48 regions and countries, the ISMN is applied. The International ISMN Agency is located in Castle Street 50 in Berlin- Steglitz.

Structure of the ISMN

The ISMN has ( since 1 January 2008) is a thirteen- digit format that is divided into four sections:

Example: 979-0-2306-7118-7

The ISMN always begins with the prefix 979-0. Thus it is distinct from the ISBN.

The next number pad ( here: 2306 ) is the publisher of the subsequent numeric keypad ( here: 7118 ) a particular note of this issue publisher. The final digit (in this case 7) is a check digit. The check digit is a mathematical tool that allows an automatic check of the correctness of the sequence of digits. The check digit is generated by a computer.

The VerlagsID may include 3 to 7 digits, the ProductID 5-1 digit depending on the size of the publisher. Both keypads have together always 8 digits arise (ie: 3-5, 4-4, 5-3, 6-2, 7-1).

Originally, the ISMN of the prefix "M " followed by a nine-digit sequence of numbers that corresponded to the structure already mentioned. The conversion to the new thirteen digit ISMN is relatively easy to pull off: It was only the " M" to the prefix " 979-0 " replaced, the check digit can remain unchanged.

The Music Publishers ' International ISMN Directory lists all the music publishers who use the ISMN world.

The ISMN may be issued with a bar code.

Checksum

The checksum of the ISMN is calculated as the 13-digit ISBN: The individual numbers ( including the check digit ) are added with all digits are first multiplied on a straight position 3. If the sum is divisible by 10 without remainder, it is a valid ISMN.

For the above example (979-0-2306-7118-7 ) would mean approximately: 9 3 * 7 9 3 * 0 2 3 * 3 0 3 * 6 7 3 * 1 1 3 * 8 7 = 110 Since 110 is divisible by 10 without remainder, the ISMN is valid.
