İsmail Cem İpekçi

İsmail Cem Öztürki İpekçi (* February 15, 1940 in Istanbul, † January 24, 2007 ) was a Turkish journalist and politician.

Life

Cem came from a respected family, who lived many hundreds of years in Salonika ( Selanik ) and had to leave the country in connection with the regulation of the exchange of populations from Greece and Turkey.

After İsmail Cem closed the Robert College in Istanbul in 1959, he studied in 1963 at the Law Faculty of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. He received the 1983 Master's degree in Sociology at the policy of the École Libre des Sciences Politiques in Paris, France. He dominated French and English fluently.

As Cem 1963 returned to Turkey, he began his career there as a journalist. He worked in several newspapers and was editor of Milliyet. Between 1971 and 1974 he served as head of Türkiye Gazeteciler Sendikasi. 1974-1975 he was the Chairman of Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu (short: TRT).

He served as Foreign Minister from 30 June 1997 to 10 July 2002. He made various negotiations in a better relationship with Greece, to what was expressed by him sponsored agreement. For Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou, he used a good relationship, which was also obtained later amicably. Furthermore, he argued for a strong bond of Turkey to the European Union.

After a dispute with the party leader Bülent Ecevit, he was Demokratik Sol Parti from the (DSP ) in 2002 excluded. He then formed the Yeni Türkiye Partisi ( YTP ) ( the new Turkey Party) on 20 July 2002, together with his former party colleagues Huesamettin Özkan and Kemal Derviş.

İsmail Cem Cem Elçin had together with a daughter, Ipek, and a son, Kerim. He was a dedicated amateur photographer. On 24 January 2007 in Istanbul Cem succumbed to his lung ailment.

Awards

He was honored with the Best Price statesman of 2000, together with the Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, for the conveyance of the two nations.
