Isolde Ahlgrimm

Isolde Ahlgrimm ( born July 31, 1914 in Vienna, † October 11, 1995 ibid ) was an Austrian harpsichordist.

Life

Isolde Ahlgrimm was a graduate in piano and later professor of harpsichord at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. She gave master classes in the U.S. and was regular participant in the Bach festivals in Leipzig. Among her pupils was, inter alia, Peter Watchorn. From 1935 she devoted herself to historical performance practice and developed a counter- philosophy to her contemporary Wanda Landowska, promoted the technical advancements of the harpsichord.

Ahlgrimm leaned harpsichords into detent design with pedal Registration for the reproduction of works of the 17th and 18th centuries and was build a system modeled on the historic character of the instrument company Ammer already in the 1930s. For playback of organ works, and Johann Sebastian Bach Art of the Fugue in addition a pedal harpsichord was used. Ahlgrimm played all works even in old age principle by heart.

Richard Strauss was their friendly relations, were entrusted with the Vienna premiere with the harpsichord part in his opera Capriccio, encouraged her then to perform the dance movements in her concerts and composed for their use alone a concert circuit ( the work was now at Schott -Mainz published ).

From 1935, it jointly with her husband Erich Fiala, a collector of Amati violins, concerts on original instruments. In this respect it may be considered a pioneer of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, with whom she da gamba and obbligato harpsichord and The Musical Offering by JS Bach 's sonatas for viola grossed on records around 1955.

She was the first played in the 1930s, the complete Mozart sonatas on a historic fortepiano. The first recording of the complete works for harpsichord by JS Bach was from 1954.

Isolde Ahlgrimm was buried at Vienna's Central Cemetery.
