Jaak Jõerüüt

Jaak Jõerüüt ( born December 9, 1947 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer, politician and diplomat.

Training

After graduation in 1966 Jaak Jõerüüt graduated in 1973 his studies in economics at the Polytechnic Institute in Tallinn. From 1970 to 1976 he was an editor at various newspapers, publishers and libraries, before he was employed from 1977 to 1989 at the Writers' Union of the Estonian SSR. 1989/90 he was briefly Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Estonia.

Diplomat

With restoration of Estonian independence Jaak Jõerüüt went into the diplomatic service in Estonia. From 1993 to 1997 he was the Estonian Ambassador to Finland and from 1998 to 2002 in Italy ( mitakkreditiert in Malta and Cyprus). From 2002 to 2004 he was inspector at the Estonian foreign ministry. In July 2004, the appointment was followed by the Estonian representative at the United Nations.

Politician

From November 2004 to October 2005 was Jaak Jõerüüt as a member of the liberal Estonian Reform Party ( Reformierakond ) in the cabinets of Prime Minister Juhan Parts, and Andrus Ansip, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Estonia. Following the resignation of Foreign Minister Kristiina Ojuland he took over from 11 to 21 February 2005 business leaders, the secretary of state.

Since October 2006 to 2011 was Jaak Jõerüüt ambassador to Latvia. Since 2011 he has been ambassador in Sweden.

Writer

Jaak Jõerüüt is one of the most outstanding Estonian writers of the present day. He feels particularly committed to humanism. He is a member of the Estonian Writers' Union and the Estonian PEN Club.

Works

His first publication was Poems 1975 Total have been published. , A two-volume novel ( Raisakullid 1982-85 ), memoirs of his stay in Rome, six collections of short stories, four volumes of poetry and two children's books.

For his work he received the 1980 and 1991 Tuglas prize for the best story. 1983 Smuul Prize ( for children's books ). 1988 was followed by the price of the magazine journalism Sirp and 2003, the annual prize of the literary magazine Looming.

Private life

Jaak Jõerüüt is with the poet and writer Viivi Luik ( born 1946 ) married.
