Jack Metcalfe

Jack Metcalfe (actually John Patrick Metcalfe, born February 3, 1912 in Bellingen, New South Wales, † 16 January 1994 Tura Beach, New South Wales) was an Australian athlete whose strongest discipline was the triple jump. He also came into existence in the long jump, high jump and javelin.

First international successes celebrated Metcalfe at the British Empire Games in London in 1934. He won with 15.63 m in the triple jump, won with 6.93 m bronze medal in the long jump with 1.88m and was fourth in the high jump. On 14 December 1935, he improved the world record in Sydney of the Japanese Olympic Champion Nambu Chūhei in the triple jump by six inches to 15.78 m.

At the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 Metcalfe won the bronze medal in the triple jump. After the first round, he finished with a jump of 15.50 m and 26 cm behind the eventual winner Naoto Tajima of Japan in second place. While Metcalfe in this contest succeeded no more increase, Tajima jumped in the fourth test on 16.00 m and snatched the world record. Meanwhile compatriot Masao Harada drew the sixth and final round with 15,66 m still past Metcalfe. The Australians remained in these games the only medalist of his country. He also reached the split twelfth place in the high jump with 1.85m.

1937 Metcalfe won the Australian Championships in the triple jump and javelin. In the high jump, he finished second. The following year he defended at the British Empire Games in Sydney his title in the triple jump with 15.49 meters successfully. In addition, he won the javelin throw with 55.53 meters bronze medal, finished third in the long jump with 7.08 meters fifth place in the high jump with 1.82 m the seventh. More participation in major international events prevented the Second World War. Last Metcalfe in 1947, third in the shot put at the Australian Championships. After that, he remained the sport even as a manager of the Australian Olympic team in 1948 and as a member of the organizing committee of the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne connected.
