The Jackson Bay (also Jackson 's Bay ) is a gently curved, about 24 km wide bay in Westland District in the West Coast region on the South Island of New Zealand.

The bay on the Tasman Sea is land-side bounded by the Southern Alps.

Naming

The Jackson Bay was named by Captain Cook as Open Bay, the origin of the present name is not clearly determined. Possible eponym or name sources are:

  • Port Jackson, New South Wales (Australia ), from there started many settlers who settled here, their crossing of the Tasman Sea;
  • James Hayter Jackson, a locally known whalers;
  • William Jackson, also a whaler, who belonged to a group of offenders who were here exposed to 1810.

Geography

The westernmost point of the bay is the headland Jackson Head, the northeast border is not well defined, but the common alluvial fan of the River Turnbull and Okuru River can be regarded as the outermost point. The small archipelago of the Open Bay Islands is located at this point just five kilometers from the coast in the Tasman Sea.

The bay marks a big change in the terrain image of the west coast. Northward allow the small fertile plains between the mountains and the sea in a moderate scale animal husbandry. South vanish the coastal plains and the land is steep and mountainous significantly. Within 60 kilometers of the country is dominated by the first deep glacial valleys at Lake McKerrow, further south, these glacial valleys of fjords of Fiordland National Park.

The bay marks the most southern stretch of the road network along the West Coast. The narrow road winds along the coast of Haast on the northeastern end point of the small fishing village of Jackson Bay near Jackson Head.

The road to Jackson Bay is often referred to as one of the best kept secrets in front of tourists on the West Coast.

The village is situated near the mouth of Arawhata (or Arawata ) River; the third river that brings water to be in this short stretch of coast from the mountains to the Tasman Sea, is 10 kilometers east of Jackson Head which opens Waiatoto River.

History

It is first mentioned in various records colonization of the area around 1810. Initially, emigrants from England tried with crops and livestock in the region south of Haast. Between 1875 and 1878 about 400 people settled in the area of Jackson Bay. The battle against the jungle and the very rainy nature had little success for the Italian, 100 German and some Polish-born settlers. Around 1880 moved a large part of the inhabitants to enable Otago. Today, less than one hundred people live permanently along the coast; only by the increasing yacht and boat traffic along the coast, for which the Jackson Bay last stop before the fiords in Fiordland National Park and the torn coastline, more people come by occasionally.
