Jacob van Hulsdonck

Biography

Jacob van Hulsdonck was born in 1582 in Antwerp. After his parents had moved to Middelburg, he spent his youth and apprenticeship. His teacher is unknown, being willing and Meijer exclude an apprenticeship in Bosschaert 's studio. 1608 he was admitted as a master in the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. The following year, 1609, Jacob van Hulsdonck married in Middelburg Maria la Hoes. Together with Maria la Hoes Hulsdonck had 7 children, including Gillis van Hulsdonck, who like his father was a painter. Jacob van Hulsdonck had several apprentices, among others in the years 1613, 1617/18 and 1622/23. Maria la Hoes died in 1629, after Jacob van Hulsdonck the sailors widow married Josina Peeters. This gave him another son. Jacob van Hulsdonck died in 1647 at or Antwerp.

Art Historical Significance

Jacob van Hulsdonck heard as, inter alia, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Osias Beert and Clara Peeters to the group earlier Flemish still life painters. As with other still life painters of the early 17th century, Jacob van Hulsdonck was not yet on a subject within the meaning of Still life of a certain type specializes. So are pieces of him both flowers and fruit pieces as well banketjes (snack images ) present. His meal still life show the typical for the time, avoid duplication, from a high vantage point looked compilation of numerous objects on a table. In his fruit pieces Hulsdonck painted almost exclusively plums, grapes, peaches, oranges and lemons served in Chinese plates and bowls or in a basket. Since the borders were not yet staked between the different types of still life in those early days completely, he combined his fruit baskets and plates occasionally with a small bouquet. Also typical for Hulsdonck as a representative of early still life painting is the use of wood panels and copper plates as supports for his paintings. Jacob van Hulsdoncks paintings show the influence or knowledge of other still life painters active at the same time recognize. Vroom saw clear parallels to the works of Jan Soreau, whereas Bergström emphasizes particularly the proximity to Balthasar van der Ast. Sybille Ebert- Schiffer refers nor convincing similarities with contemporary still life of serving in Antwerp Frans Snyders. Jacob van Hulsdonck signed in addition to the full signature IVHULSDONCK · FE only with the initials " JvH " can not be confused with those of Jan van den Hoecke.
