Jacques Lipchitz

Jacques Lipchitz, Chaim actually Jakoff Lipschitz, (born 10 Augustjul / August 22 1891greg in Druskininkai, Lithuania. . † May 16, 1973 on Capri ) was a French- American sculptor of the 20th century.

Life

Lipchitz moved to the end of the business school with the help of his mother in 1909 to Paris, where he studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and at the Académie Julian. In Paris he met Georges Braque, Juan Gris and Pablo Picasso know. From 1912 he exhibited regularly at the Salon d' Automne and the Salon National des Beaux -Arts. In 1915 he met Berthe Kitrosser, whom he later married. In 1924 he received French citizenship and moved the following year to Boulogne -sur -Seine.

Among the emigrants who in 1941 escaped from the French Vichy regime succeeded, were intellectuals and artists, for example, in addition Lipchitz, who is of Jewish descent, was Marc Chagall and Max Ernst. The flight was made possible by the American journalist Varian Fry in Marseille of a relief committee, the Emergency Rescue Committee, headed to allow refugees to leave the country. 1946 was followed by a stay of several months in Paris; his wife Berthe decided to stay there, after which the divorce took place. 1948 Lipchitz worked with the architect Philip Johnson at the roofless church in New Harmony, Indiana. He designed one of the gates of the church, leading into the nave. In the same year he became an American citizen and married his second wife, the sculptor Yulla Halberstadt; his only child, Lolya Rachel, was born. 1949 Lipchitz moved to Hastings-on -Hudson, New York. 1963 Lipchitz visited Israel for the first time and was represented from 1964 to 1966 a year to exhibitions in the Marlborough - Gerson Gallery, New York.

Lipchitz died in 1973 on Capri and was buried in Jerusalem.

Work

1913 emerged - influenced by Pablo Picasso and his friendship with the Mexican artist Diego Rivera - first cubist works he still designed in the frontal view.
