The Route de la Baie James is a 620- km long highway in the Canadian province of Québec. It runs from Matagami to Radisson in the region Jamesie. The road, which is a northern continuation of Route 109 is fully paved and maintained in winter. It has a certain meaning for tourist travelers to the Baie James.

Description

The Route de la Baie James was built to open up the various remote locations of the James Bay hydroelectric project, Hydro-Québec. In particular, up to 500 tons of heavy construction equipment should be transported effortlessly. Construction was completed in just 420 days, the official opening took place on 11 February 1972.

The road passes through largely unpopulated area. To the west branch off four side streets and lead to various Cree communities on the James Bay. To the east branch off the 666 km long route Transtaïga and the 424 km long route du Nord. Bridges span multiple wide rivers. The only rest stop is located at kilometer 381; it is operated around the clock and offers the only gas station as well as catering and accommodation. For safety reasons, travelers should report at kilometer 6, in addition, there are several emergency phones along the road ( a mobile network does not exist) in the registration office.
