James Sallis

James Sallis ( born December 21, 1944 in Helena, Arkansas) is an American writer, poet, critic, editor, musician and translator.

Life

Sallis trained as a respiratory therapist and worked in intensive care at numerous hospitals. Already during his studies at Tulane University in New Orleans, he was able to publish her ​​first works. After graduating, he moved first to Iowa and then to London. There, his first book, A Few Last Words, a collection of short stories from the years 1967-1970 was created. He admitted in 1968/69 with his friend and colleague Michael Moorcock the science fiction magazine New Worlds out. Sallis has been translated into English Raymond Queneau and Alexander Pushkin. A biography of Chester Himes appeared in 2001. Currently he lives with his wife Karyn in Phoenix (Arizona ) and teaches creative writing at Phoenix College.

Sallis was particularly known for his six books comprehensive set around the black private detective Lew Griffin. James Sallis was nominated for several major literary awards, including the Anthony Award, the Nebula Award, the Edgar Allan Poe Award, the Shamus Award and the Dagger Award. His novel "Driver" was filmed with Ryan Gosling in the lead role and in 2011 honored at the Cannes Film Festival with the award for best director.
