Jan Hernych

January Mauda Hernych (born 7 July 1979, in Prague, then Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech tennis player.

Career

Singles

Hernych started his pro career in 1998 and continued in the early days with two ITF tournament wins first accents. In 1999, he defeated his first top 100 players with the Spaniard Albert Portas. Two years later he celebrated in Tulsa, Oklahoma its first Challenger success: He won the final against Vincent Spadea 7-5, 7-5.

In Prague, he won his second Challenger tournament in 2004 and first participated in tournaments on the ATP World Tour. He won several victories respect, among other things, against the then world number Twelfth Mark Philippoussis and the Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten. In addition, he participated in the Wimbledon Championships 2004 in part, different from but already in the first round. In August 2004 Hernych was the first time among the top 100 in the world rankings.

The following year he consolidated his top 100 position and defended his title in Prague. In addition, he moved in with three of the four Grand Slam tournaments in the second round, only the U.S. Open, he finished in round 1 In April 2006 he defeated in Valencia, the then number 6 Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 7-5, which is his only previous victory against a top -10 player. On 27 April 2009 Hernych reached his best ever world ranking placement with number 59. His biggest success is reaching the third round of the Australian Open 2011. He won a qualifier in the first round with 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 against Denis Istomin. The subsequent match against Thomaz Bellucci became the marathon game: Only after 4 hours and 36 minutes turned Hernych his match ball for 6:2, 6:7 (11 ), 6-4, 6-7 ( 3), 8:6. In the third round he lost finally clearly against Robin Soderling.

Doubles

Since 1998 Hernych is also regularly represented in double tournaments. In 2002, he celebrated at the side of Shaun Rudman in Wolfsburg his first Challenger tournament victory, a year later he was with Uros Vico in Aptos successful. In 2009, he won a doubles partner Ivo Minář the ATP tournament in Munich by a 6-4, 6-4 against the former top-30 player Ashley Fisher and Jordan Kerr.
