Jane Darwell

Jane Darwell (* October 15, 1879 in Palmyra, Missouri as Patti Woodard; † August 13, 1967 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California ) was an American actress.

Life and career

Jane Darwell was born in 1879 as the daughter of William Robert Woodard and Ellen Booth. After a first experience in film 1913-1915, she returned to the theater. Only with the advent of the talkies Jane Darwell established as a character actress in Hollywood. Under contract with 20th Century Fox, she played among others in numerous films of Shirley Temple. For her performance in John Ford's The Grapes of Wrath, the adaptation of the novel by John Steinbeck, Darwell won at the Academy Awards 1941 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. In the course of her career Jane Darwell still played in other films of John Ford, including My Darling Clementine and footprints in the sand. In The Ox -Bow she played in 1943 in another Western with. After numerous appearances on television, the actress had her last appearance in Mary Poppins.

Jane Darwell appeared in over 170 films throughout their career. A star, height 6733 Hollywood Walk of Fame remembers it. The actress died at age 87 of a heart attack. Her grave is at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
