Jean Defraigne

Jean Pierre Marie Olivier Germain Defraigne ( born April 19, 1929 in Roosendaal en Nispen, North Brabant, Netherlands) is a Belgian politician of the Parti Réformateur Libéral (PRL ), who was not only ministers but also twice president of the Chamber of Deputies.

Biography

After school he studied law at the University of Liège and worked as a lawyer after becoming a Doctor of Rights and later became alderman of Liege.

In 1965 he was first elected as the candidate of PRL as a member of the Chamber of Deputies and belonged to this until 1974. During this time he was from January 1973 to April 1974 in the government of Prime Minister Edmond Leburton Secretary of State for Regional Economics at the Economics Minister Willy Claes.

After retiring from the House of Representatives between 1974 and 1977 he was a member of the Senate. In April 1974, Prime Minister Leo Tindemans appointed him at the same time as Minister of Public Works. This ministerial post he held until 1976.

1977 Defraigne was again elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies and remained active there until 1989. Between 20 May 1980 and 24 October 1980, he was the first president of the Chamber of Deputies. This post he held again 18 December 1981 until 19 January 1988.

For his political merits him the honorary title was awarded Minister of State on December 2, 1983. In 1989 he was elected member of the 3rd European Parliament, where he served until 1994.
