Jean-Marie Valhubert

Jean -Marie Valhubert, actually Jean -Marie Mellon Roger ( born October 22, 1764 in Avranches, † December 3, 1805 at Austerlitz ) was a French brigadier general.

Life

1784 Mellon Roger joined as a volunteer in the army and was able to excel during the revolutionary wars several times. He fought against Valenciennes and Quesnoy (13 September 1793); in the latter he was taken prisoner.

Later he was able to return to " word of honor " back to his homeland. He was a great admirer of Napoleon, and came to some promotions in rank of general in his staff. He fought bravely at Monte Bello (June 9, 1800), at Marengo (14 June 1800) and on the Mincio (25 December 1800).

Under the leadership of Marshal Louis Gabriel Suchet Valhubert fought bravely at the Battle of Austerlitz (2 December 1805) and was very severely wounded. The next day he succumbed to his injuries and found his final resting place on the edge of the battlefield.

  • His name is found on the east pillars ( 18 column) of the Arc de Triomphe on Place Charles -de- Gaulle ( Paris).
  • The sculptor Pierre Cartellier (1757-1831) created in 1815 a statue of him
  • La place Valhubert in Avranches and the Rue Général Valhubert in Céaux ( Basse -Normandie ) are named in honor of him.
  • The place Valhubert in the 5th and the 8th arrondissement of Paris also bear in his honor his name.
