Jean-Pierre Duport

Jean -Pierre Duport (also called Duport l' aîné ) (* November 27, 1741 in Paris, † December 31, 1818 in Berlin) was a French cellist and composer.

Life

Jean -Pierre Duport learned to play the cello at Martin Berteau ( 1691-1771 ). The journal Mercure de France reported in March 1761 by an appearance at the Concert spiritual, at the Duport successfully brought its own sonata heard. The same magazine wrote five years later " l' admirable et peut- être l' inimitable Monsieur Duport ". From 1762 to 1769 he belonged to the private chapel of Prince Louis François de Bourbon -Conti and gave acclaimed concerts in next to the main Paris salons. His students included the Prince de Conti, but especially his younger brother, Jean -Louis Duport. As of 1768 took Jean -Pierre Duport various concert tours abroad, which eventually led him to England, Spain, Denmark and 1773 in Germany. At a concert at Potsdamer Hof, Frederick the Great offered him the post of principal cellist at the Berlin Opera, and also the cello teacher of the Crown Prince.

1787 Duport was appointed by King Frederick William II superintendent of the royal chamber music. He moved with his wife, singer Jeanne- Marie and the children to Berlin. At Potsdamer Hof Duport learned the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( of there the Piano Variations on a minuet by Duport KV Mr. composed 573) and Ludwig van Beethoven know, this has composed for and with Duport Council, both the king Friedrich Wilhelm dedicated Cello Sonatas op 5 In 1811 Jean -Pierre Duport withdrew from his offices.

Effect

Duport is considered one of the founders of the German cellist school. Gustav Schilling (1803-1881) mentioned in his " Encyclopedia of entire musical sciences or Universal Lexicon of Music ", " .. the grandeur of its weighty bass figures " and " the soulful singing tenor in the region". With its double handle technology and pizzicato basses he astonished his audience. Duport succeeded in a hitherto unknown way to exploit the full sonority of his instrument.
