The place Jelling [ jɛleŋ ] or Jellinge [ jɛleŋə ] is located in central Jutland, north-west of Vejle. The Royal Jelling is one of the major archaeological sites in Denmark. Between the largest grave mounds ( North and South Hill ) Denmark here is a stone church dating from around 1100 AD, which was built on older wooden churches. Previously available to the Thyrastein and Harald Stein. The ensemble of church, grave mounds and runic stones in 1994 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The place had cultic significance since the Bronze Age. Not far from Viborg is moms, where appropriate in this time inlaid with silver wire Prunkaxt was found. But there were kings of the 10th century, the Jelling gave its present meaning.

Gorm the Elder

The heathen king Gorm the Elder applies ( perhaps wrongly ) as a unifier kingdom of Denmark. Older, traditional mythological kings were probably regional rulers. Gorm extended the northern hill and put the Thyrastein for his wife. In the north hill a divided timber chamber was found, which is regarded as a double grave. But she was up on a silver cup empty. Gorm died about 936 (according to other sources 958 ) AD The grave was cleared shortly after. Whether he or his grandson built the South Hill, which was never used, is open.

Harald Bluetooth

The son of Gorm, Harald Bluetooth was baptized only in the more mature age of about 40 years, King and was in the year 960. After that, he was probably those mighty rune stone in order that Harald Stein or the baptismal font of Denmark is called. He built the first wooden church, in which he umbettete his parents.
