Jens Wilken Hornemann

Jens Wilken Hornemann ( born March 6, 1770 in Marstal; † 30 July 1841 in Copenhagen) was a Danish botanist, of the Flora Danica published after the death of Martin Vahl. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Hornem. ".

Life

Hornemann was from 1801 professor at the Botanical Garden of the University of Copenhagen. After the death of Martin Vahl, he took over the further publication of the Flora Danica with the fascicles 22 to 39 that included to 1840, the number of 1080 panels (and thus plant descriptions ). From 1808 he was professor of Botany, from 1817 he was also director of the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen.

Honors

The genus was named in honor of him Hornemannia of Willdenow, but is synonymous with Mazus and Lindernia. Also in epithets such as Carduelis hornemanni or Epilobium hornemannii, will remember him. The fungus Stropharia hornemannii was named after him in 1934. 1813 Hornemann was a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, 1815 corresponding member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 1816, he was appointed to the of-town member. In 1815 he was appointed Knight of the Dannebrogordens.

Miscellaneous

Hans Christian Andersen, the Hornemann frequently visited in Copenhagen, took him as a model for the Professor of Botany who knows how to interpret the behavior of plants in the Little Ida's Flowers.
