Jeret Peterson

Jeret "Speedy" Peterson ( born December 12, 1981 in Boise, Idaho, † 25 July 2011 at Lambs Canyon, Utah) was an American freestyle skier. He was dedicated to the discipline Aerials ( jumping) and won in season 2004/ 05 the corresponding World Cup discipline standings.

Biography

Peterson began at the age of seven years with the skiing and turned out to be 14 -year-old finally the freestyle skiing too. At the Junior World Championships in 2000 and 2001 he won the bronze medal. His debut in the World Cup he had in Deer Valley, where he was ranked 19 on 6 January 2001. In the following season, he qualified with two top -10 results for the Olympic Winter Games 2002. The first podium in the World Cup he achieved on 12 January 2003 at Mont Tremblant with second place, another podium finish was added in the winter of 2003 /04. The 2004/05 season was Peterson's successful. On his first World Cup victory on January 16, 2005 in Lake Placid followed by two more, so he decided to Aerials - discipline rating for themselves.

In the summer of 2005, a friend shot himself in Peterson's home in Park City before his eyes. Although burdened him this event mentally strong, Peterson was before the 2006 Winter Olympics the most cited favorite. After the first round he was in third place, but he dropped back to seventh place because he could not stand his jump "Hurricane" ( three somersaults with five screws). Disgusted with his defeat, he got drunk in a bar in Sauze d' Oulx and started a brawl, after which he was expelled forthwith from the Olympic Village from the USOC.

In the season 2006/ 07 won Peterson two more times in the World Cup. He then took a year off and worked as a construction worker in Idaho. After a suicide attempt in September 2007, he underwent an alcohol rehab. In 2009, he was a successful comeback and has already won again in his second World Cup competition. However, he failed to win a medal also in its fourth participation at the World Championships this year. In the World Cup season 2009/10 he did not initially approach the performance level of the previous winter. At the Olympic Winter Games 2010, however, he performed with success the "Hurricane" jump and won the silver medal.

Peterson shot himself on 25 July 2011 at Lambs Canyon between Salt Lake City and Park City in Utah. Officials discovered the corpse and found near his car a farewell letter. According to police, Peterson had chosen the emergency before he shot himself. Three days earlier he had been arrested in Idaho for drunk driving in minor cases, and released on bail.
