Jessore District

The district Jessore ( Bengali: যশোর জেলা, Yaśor Jela Jela Jashor ) is an administrative unit in the west of Khulna Division in Bangladesh. Its capital is Jessore.

The 2578.20 km ² large administrative unit is bordered on the north by the districts Jhenaidaha and Magura, on the east by the districts Narail and Khulna, Satkhira and Khulna in the south and the west by the Indian state of West Bengal.

The district Jessore, founded in 1781 is divided into the eight so-called Upazilas: Abhaynagar, Bagherpara, Chaugachha, Jhikargachha, Keshabpur, Jessore Sadar, Manirampur and Sharsha.

Within this administrative subdivision, there are four self-governing cities ( municipalities ), 92 Union Parishads (village councils) and 1,434 villages.

Jessore was the first independent district of Bangladesh. On December 6, 1971, the residents of the district won its independence from Pakistan.
