Jim McDermott

James Adelbert "Jim" McDermott ( born December 28, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American psychiatrist and politician of the Democratic Party.

Life

McDermott was born in Chicago and was the first member of his family, who completed a college education, first at Wheaton College in Illinois and later at the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago, where he in 1963 received a degree as a doctor of medicine. In the years 1963 and 1964 he was at the hospital in Buffalo ( New York) worked, then from 1964 to 1966 on research and teaching hospital of the University of Illinois. At the Medical Center of the University of Washington in Seattle, he conducted research from 1966 to 1968 on child psychiatry. In the Medical Corps of the United States Navy, he served during the Vietnam War in California as a psychiatrist.

In 1970 he wrote his first for political office and was elected to the 43rd electoral district in the House of Representatives from Washington. In 1974 he competed for the Senate from Washington and held that post after gained re- election 1974 until 1980. During the same year he won the Democratic primary for the office of governor against his factional rival Dixy Lee Ray, was defeated in the election for governor but Republican John Spellman. From 1987 to 1989 he was commissioned by the State Department as a doctor and psychiatrist for various operating in an official American organizations (including USAID, Peace Corps ) in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo, worked.

Since January 3, 1989, he sits as a successor to Mike Lowry for the 7th Congressional District of the State of Washington in the U.S. House of Representatives; his most recent re-election he won in 2008 with a vote share of 84 percent to Republican Steve Beren. In Congress, he serves on the Committee on Ways and Means.

On 7 June 2007 McDermott proposed a tax on online games before, the fight for a gambling addiction effectively and secondly, by his statement of 31 January 2008 about 8-42 billion USD taxes during the first ten years for the U.S. is expected to deliver budget.

McDermott is seen in Michael Moore's film Fahrenheit 9/11. In it he describes how the Bush administration succeeded to exploit the fears of Americans after September 11.

Honors

On 22 August 2007, he was by King Letsie III. Lesotho knighted ( Knight) appointed. For his efforts in a law to promote Africa ( African Growth and Opportunity Act ) have been recognized, which came in very handy the economy of Lesotho.

Private life

Jim McDermott is married to Therese Hansen lawyer and the couple have two grown children.
