Jim Nolet

Jim Nolet ( born December 11, 1961 in Dallas as James Michael Nolet ) is an American violinist and violist of the Creative Jazz, who is regarded as one of the central figures of New York's Knitting Factory scene.

Life and work

Nolet had from the age of seven violin lessons and turned six years later, the improvisation. After a classical education at the college, he took lessons with Gary Peacock. He studied in Seattle on " Cornish Institute of the Arts ", then at New York's Juilliard School of Music. During this time he played in classical chamber music ensembles, but also with musicians from the jazz avant-garde such as Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Butch Morris and Hamiet Bluiett, but also with Hilton Ruiz, Joanne Brackeen, David Murray and Marc Ribot. Then he became a member of the Jazz Passengers and working with his own groups, such as in a trio with Glen Moore and Newman Taylor Baker or with Fred Hopkins and Sunny Murray. He toured North America, Europe and Japan. In 1993, he presented himself on his debut album in a variety of formations from duo to big ensemble. His New York String Improviser 's Orchestra also collaborated with John Zorn. He also worked with Don Byron, John Purcell, John Hicks and Tim Hagans. At times he lives in Brazil, where he founded the band Arco Voz, which he introduced in the United States in 2002.

In 1987, he was with Bern Nix one of the founders of the Composer's Improviser 's Workshop; in this context, he also teaches. Furthermore, he also composes for film and theater.
