Jim Palmer

James "Jim" Alvin Palmer ( born May 15, 1945 in New York, New York ) is a former American professional baseball player in Major League Baseball. His nickname is Cakes.

Biography

Jim Palmer spent his entire career in the American League with the Baltimore Orioles, as their greatest pitcher he is. 1963 committed the Orioles right-handed pitcher in the Amateur Draft. His debut with the Orioles he gave on April 17, 1965. Milt Pappas in 1966, he replaced the pitcher rotation of the Orioles. He succeeded in attaining fifteen wins and he could with his team win the championship in the AL and move into the World Series. On October 6, Palmer threw the second game of the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and their star pitcher Sandy Koufax. The Orioles won the game 6-0 and Palmer threw the complete game. He was the youngest bowler who achieved a complete game and a shutout in the World Series. The Orioles won the series 4-0.

But in the two years that followed, Palmer had to contend with the arm, shoulder and back problems. He could actively intervene again until 1969 in the baseball scene, after he had not played the entire 1968 season on the major league level through operations. With Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Palmer, the Orioles had a high-profile pitcher rotation. On August 13, 1969 Palmer managed a no hitter against the Oakland Athletics. This season the Orioles won the championship again in the American League, but subject to the New York Mets in the World Series. 1970 and 1971 won McNally (24 and 21), Cuellar (24 and 20) and Palmer (20 and 21) more than 20 games. In 1971, Pat Dobson joined yet added with 20 wins. The Orioles of 1971 and the Chicago White Sox from 1920 up to today are the only baseball team with four launchers with 20 or more wins in a season. 1970 and 1971 were the Orioles and the World Series to decide for themselves. Overall, Palmer came in eight seasons over 20 wins. 1973, 1975 and 1976 he won the Cy Young Award of the American League. From 1976 to 1979, he won four consecutive Gold Glove Award as the best fielder on the position of the pitcher. Six times he took part in the All- Star game.

Since the season 1979 Palmer always struggled with injury problems that could not find it again to its usual strength. In 1983 he again reached the World Series with his team. Here he came in the third game as Einwechselwerfer for Mike Flanagan. With the win against Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies Palmer was the first pitcher who scored a win in the World Series in three different decades. His last game he played on 12 May 1984 before he was released on 23 May 1984 by the Orioles and he finished his career. In none of his 19 seasons, he had a grand slam home run allowed.

Palmer remained even after his playing career the baseball faithful and still works as a commentator for national and local television stations. In 1990 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
