Jimmy Deenihan

Jimmy Deenihan ( Irish: Séamus Ó Duibhneacháin ) ( born September 11, 1952 in Finuge, Lixnaw, County Kerry) is an Irish Fine Gael politician, who was a successful Gaelic football player even over many years.

Life

After studying at St. Michael 's College Listowel and at Thomond College of Education in Limerick Deenihan worked as a teacher. From 1973 to 1982 he played in addition to the position of the right- cornerback Gaelic football with the club Finuge GAA and won with the team of County Kerry seven times the Munster Senior Football Championship and 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981 five times the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. Most recently, he was team captain in 1981.

After an unsuccessful candidate for the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) in November 1982, he was nominated in 1983 by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Garret FitzGerald as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Eireann ) and belonged to this until 1987.

In 1987 he was for the first time as Fine Gael MEPs ( Teachta Dala ) selected and represented in this until 2011 the constituency of Kerry North. During this time he was 20 December 1994 to 26 June 1997 Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, headed by Prime Minister John Bruton " Regenbogenkoaliton " by Fine Gael, Irish Labour Party and Democratic Left.

In the local elections in 1999, he was also voted the best result in the constituency Listowel to a member of the County Council of County Kerry (Kerry County Council ). In the 2011 elections, he was again elected to the lower house and with this in henceforth the interests of the constituency of Kerry North - West Limerick.

On 9 March 2011 the new Prime Minister Enda Kenny appointed him as Minister of Art and the Irish-speaking areas ( Gaeltacht ) in the Irish Government.
