John Bruton

John Gerard Bruton ( Irish: Seán de Briotún; born May 18, 1947 in Dunboyne, County Meath ) is an Irish politician and was Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) of Ireland.

Bruton studied law at University College Dublin. In 1969 he was chosen as the hitherto youngest member in the Irish Parliament, where he served continuously until 2004. From 1981 to 1982, from 1986 to 1987 he was Finance Minister, 1982-1983 Minister of Industry and Energy and from 1983 to 1986 Minister of Industry, Trade, business and tourism.

In 1990 he was elected Chairman of the Fine Gael party. He held until 2001 this office. From 1994 to 1997 he served as an Irish Prime Minister with a rainbow coalition. Under his government, the peace process in Northern Ireland has been intensified and the Irish economy experienced strong growth. In 1996 he was the EU presidency. He is currently Head of the European Commission to the United States delegation.
