James Ryan (Irish politician)

James Ryan (December 6, 1891September 25, 1970 ) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and several ministers.

Biography

Ryan graduated in medicine and worked after graduation as a doctor. In addition, he was a farmer and later director of the company.

His political career began in 1919 when he was elected as the candidate of Sinn Féin MP for the first parliament ( First Dáil ). In the following decades he was elected to represent the constituency of Wexford repeatedly to deputies ( Teachta Dala ), where he in 1927 representatives of Fianna Fáil was until then to his departure from the Dáil Éireann in 1965.

On March 9, 1932, he was appointed President of the Executive Council Éamon de Valera to the Minister of Agriculture of the first provided by the Fianna Fáil government. This office he retained for the next nearly fifteen years until 21 January 1947. During a reshuffle Prime Minister appointed him ( Taoiseach ) de Valera to then Minister of Health and Minister of Social Welfare. On February 18, 1948, he retired after the loss of power for Fianna Fáil from the government. After de Valera became prime minister again on 13 June 1951, Dr Ryan until June 2, 1954, in turn, the offices of Minister of Health and Minister of Social Welfare.

Most recently, he was then between March 1957 and April 1965 Finance Minister in the governments of de Valera and Seán Lemass 's successor. After retiring from the Dáil Éireann in 1965, he was nominated for Seanad Éireann and belonged to this until 1969.

His son Eoin Ryan Sr. and his grandson Eoin Ryan Jr. have also become politically active.
