Patrick Hogan (Ceann Comhairle)

Patrick Hogan (Irish Pádraig Ó hÓgáin, born January 1, 1886 in Kilmaley, County Clare, † January 24, 1969 ) was an Irish politician of the Irish Labour Party and former Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ).

Biography

Hogan initially graduated in law and was then as barrister ( Barrister -at -Law) worked.

From July to September 1922, he was Acting Minister of Labour. In 1923 he was elected as a candidate of the Irish Labour Party for the first time as a deputy in the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There, he represented to the loss of his mandate in 1938 initially for 15 years, the interests of the constituency of County Clare. Between 1938 and 1943 he was a representative of the group of workers member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), before he was in 1943 again elected deputy of the lower house and there until his death in 1969 - with an interruption from 1944 to 1948 after an election defeat - for further 22 years in turn represented the constituency of County Clare.

Already on 27 October 1927, he was Deputy Chairman ( Leas - Cheann Comhairle ) of the House, but resigned less than six months later, on 8 March 1928, this office back. However, he was then again from 1932 to 1938 Vice- President of the Parliament.

On 13 June 1951 he was the successor of Frank Fahy as chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). This office he held until his retirement at the age of almost 82 years on November 7, 1967, with 16 years in office, according to Fahy of the lower house speaker with the second longest period of service. At the same time he was the first President of the Parliament from among the Irish Labour Party.
