Gemma Hussey

Gemma Hussey ( born November 11, 1938 in Dublin) is an Irish Fine Gael politician.

Biography

Gemma Hussey was first employee of the public service and, most recently director of the Institute for English Language in Dublin.

Her political career began in 1977 with appointment as member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ), in which she as a non-party and then from 1981 to 1982 was initially a member of the Fine Gael one of the three representatives of the National University of Ireland. Subsequently, she was elected a member of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented in this until 1989, the interests of the constituency of Wicklow.

After the electoral victory of the Fine Gael was ( Taoiseach ) Garret FitzGerald appointed on 14 December 1982 by the Prime Minister to Minister of Education. After a cabinet reshuffle they took over on 14 February 1986, the Office of the Minister for Social Welfare and held that office until the end of FitzGerald's term of office on 10 March 1987.
