Brendan Corish
Brendan Corish (Irish Breandán Mac Fheorais; born November 19, 1918 † 17 February 1990) was an Irish politician of the Irish Labour Party and Deputy Prime Minister ( Tánaiste ).
Biography
Corish was elected on December 4, 1945 in the course of a by-election in the constituency of Wexford in the 12th Dáil Éireann. In the following elections, he was able to defend his position always. In June 1954, he was first minister for social welfare in the Prime Minister John A. Costello (Fine Gael ) led coalition government and held that office until the election defeat of the coalition against the Fianna Fáil in March 1957.
1960 as the successor to William Norton elected as Chairman of the Irish Labour Party. As such, he increasingly led in the following years a sozialistischere approaches within the party. In the elections to Dáil Éireann in 1961 and 1965 his party was doing its mandates from 10 to 16 and then eventually increase to 22.
The first government of the Labour Party, however, came only after the elections in 1973. After Fine Gael and the Labour Party had each made their own opposition politics since 1957, they realized now that the only way to replace Fianna Fáil in government, may be a common approach. Shortly after the announcement of the elections, both parties agreed on a joint election campaign in the points that they united. The so-called " National Coalition " ( National Coalition) was the first possible alternative government for years.
In this government of Prime Minister Liam Cosgrave Corish was born on March 14, 1973 Deputy Prime Minister ( Tánaiste ), Minister of Health and again Minister of Social Welfare.
As this National Coalition for the elections in 1977 witnessed the greatest electoral defeat of a government in Irish history and lost 13 of their 73 seats, Corish resigned as Leader of the Labour Party and was replaced as such by the recent Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Social Affairs Frank Cluskey. At the elections of 23 Dáil in February 1982, he no longer went to.
