Joan Burton

Joan Burton (Irish Siobhán de Bhurtúin, born 1 February 1949) is an Irish politician of the Irish Labour Party.

Life

Joan Burton worked after studying at University College Dublin, first as a sworn Buchprüferin before she was Lecturer in Accounting at Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT ) and a guest lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam ( UDSM ) later.

After an unsuccessful bid in 1989, she was elected in 1992 as a candidate of the Irish Labour Party for the first time to the MPs ( Teachta Dala ) in the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented there initially to 1997 the constituency of Dublin West. During this time she was from January to November 1994, Minister of State in the Ministry of Social Welfare of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) John Bruton led " Regenbogenkoaliton " by Fine Gael, Irish Labour Party and Democratic Left. After a cabinet reshuffle, she was then from December 1994 to June 1997 Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and responsible as such for overseas development aid and humanitarian assistance.

After her electoral defeat in 1997, she lost her seat in the House of Commons and was at the municipal election 1999 voting district Castleknock member of the County Council of the County Fingal ( Fingal County Council ) elected. 2002 then was again her election to the House in which it again the constituency of Dublin West represents ever since. 2007 Joan Burton was also elected Vice - Chairman of the Irish Labour Party.

On 9 March 2011 she appointed the new Prime Minister Enda Kenny after the formation of the coalition of Fine Gael and Irish Labour Party for Social Affairs in the Government of Ireland.
