Barry Desmond

Barry Desmond ( born May 15, 1935 in Cork) is a former Irish trade union official and politician of the Irish Labour Party.

Biography

Desmond, the (Irish Congress of Trade Unions ( ICTU ) ) worked as a union official at the association of the Irish trade unions, began his political career as a candidate of the Irish Labour Party in 1969 with the election of the member of the House. There he found, firstly to 1977 the constituency and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown and then until 1989 the constituency of Dún Laoghaire.

After the formation of a coalition government with Fine Gael under Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Garret FitzGerald, he was responsible between June 1981 and March 1982, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and as dortiger " junior ministers " especially for economic planning.

Prime Minister FitzGerald appointed him on 14 December 1982 in its second coalition government of Fine Gael and Labour Party Minister for Social Welfare. This office he held until February 14, 1986, was also on 14 December 1982 until his resignation on January 20, 1987 Minister of Health.

In 1989, he opted not to run again for the House and argued instead for the elections to the European Parliament. After his election on 15 June 1989, he was until 1994 a member of the 3rd European Parliament.

His father, Cornelius "Con" Desmond was 1966-1967 Lord Mayor of Cork.
