Michael Hayes (politician)

Michael Hayes ( * December 1, 1889; † 11 July 1976) was an Irish university professor, politician, longtime leader of the House ( Ceann Comhairle ) and temporarily Minister.

Biography

Hayes completed a study of the Irish language and later worked as a university professor.

His political career began in 1921 when he first elected as the candidate of Sinn Féin MP for the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ), where he mainly the National University of Ireland represented in the following years. In 1922, he joined then in the Cumann na nGaedheal.

In the provisional governments of the Dáil in 1922 he was Minister of Education during the tenures of Arthur Griffith and William Thomas Cosgrave from January to September. At the same time Cosgrave appointed him on 21 August 1922 Foreign Minister, but he resigned on September 9, 1922 from the government.

On the same day he was appointed by the House as its Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) is chosen and held that post for almost ten years until March 9, 1932 and is one of the President of Parliament with the longest tenures. 1933 did not succeed in Hayes to defend his seat so that he retired from the House of Commons.

In 1938 he returned to political life back when he was elected as a candidate of the Fine Gael member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ). First, he represented there until 1948, the administrative group, before he then until 1965 mainly represented the Group culture and education. Between 1954 and 1957 he was nominated by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) John A. Costello senator.

In addition to his political career, Hayes was appointed 1951 Professor of the Irish language at the University College of Dublin ( UCD).
