Joseph McGrath (politician)

Joseph McGrath (Irish Seosamh Mac Craith, * 1887 in Dublin, † March 1, 1966 ) was an Irish politician Sinn Féin Cumann na and the nGaedheal.

Biography

McGrath, a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, was an active participant in the Easter Rising of 1916. His real political career began as the candidate of Sinn Féin in 1919 with the election of deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the first lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he initially represented the interests of the constituency of Dublin St.James' s, and then from 1921 to 1923 of Dublin North -West. He was most recently within the cleaved due to the Anglo -Irish Treaty Sinn Féin, Arthur Griffith to the supporters of this Agreement ( Pro- Treaty ).

From 1919 until 8 November 1920, he was also Vice- Minister of Labour and later from 11 January to September 9, 1922 Minister of Labour. During the period of provisional government under the chairmanship of William Thomas Cosgrave, he was then up to the December 6, 1922 Industry and Commerce Minister.

In 1923 he was elected as a candidate of the Cumann na nGaedheal back to the House of Representatives and represented there until his resignation on 29 October 1924 Mayo North constituency.

Between 21 September 1923 and 23 March 1927, he was again Minister of industry and trade and thus a member of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State, chaired by WT Cosgrave.

After retiring from the government McGrath moved into the private sector and has been a consultant of Siemens - Schuckert in the construction of the 1929 completed hydroelectric power plant in Ardnacrusha. In 1930, he was the founder of the Irish Hospitals ' Sweepstake, a lottery to finance the construction of hospitals, which made him even to a wealthy businessman. He also became involved in equestrian and horse breeding.
