Mervyn Taylor

Mervyn Taylor ( born December 1, 1931 in Dublin ) is a former Irish politician of the Irish Labour Party.

Biography

Originally from a Jewish family, Taylor studied post-school law and was after graduation worked as a Solicitor.

His national political career began as the candidate of the Irish Labour Party in 1981 with the first election for deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ), in which he held until 1997 represented the interests of the constituency of Dublin South - West after five subsequent re- elections.

On January 12, 1993, he was appointed by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Albert Reynolds to the labor minister in the existing of Fianna Fáil and Labour Party coalition government. One week after the calling of the name of the Ministry was renamed on 21 January 1993 Minister for Equality and Law Reform. As such, he belonged to the Cabinet Reynolds until the collapse of the coalition and his resignation on 17 November 1994.

As a coalition government of Fine Gael and the Labour Party was formed on 15 December 1994, the new Prime Minister John Bruton called him again to the Minister for Equality and Law Reform. As such, he was a member of the Cabinet to the end of the coalition on 26 June 1997.
